Class and size of bulk carriers

2023-08-08

Bulk carriers can be divided into different types according to the different loads, mainly the following:

collier

The coal carrier is a bulk carrier used to carry coal, and its hatch is relatively wide, which is easy to load and unload coal by grab bucket. In order to prevent coal from rolling in the bunker, a number of longitudinal baffle plates are provided at the bottom of the bunker. Some coal carriers do not need to grab buckets and boom, but have belt conveyors in the bottom of the coal hold, which can be connected with the shore conveyors and can load and unload coal by themselves

Ore carrier

Ore carriers are bulk carriers that specialize in carrying sand. Because the ore is a heavy cargo, the volume is small, easy to damage the hull. For this reason, the structure of the ore carrier is strong, the bilge of the cargo hold is mostly inclined, and the cargo hold is also equipped with longitudinal baffle, which can prevent the longitudinal rolling of the ore and enhance the strength of the hull

Timber carrier

The wooden ship is used to transport the wood transport ship, due to the light weight of wood, large volume. Therefore, the cargo hold of the wooden ship is wide, and there are no hull components such as beams and columns in the cargo hold. Also because the wood is not afraid of wind and rain, it can be loaded in the cargo hold or stacked on the deck. In order to block and enclose the wood, wooden posts are provided on the side of the deck for loading more wood

Bulk carriers can be divided into different types according to the different purposes of transportation, mainly the following:

General bulk carrier

General bulk carriers are generally single deck, tail type, and the section of the cargo hold is octagonal. Due to the single type of cargo transported, the separation requirements of the cabin are not high, and the proportion of various bulk cargo is very different, so the bulk cargo hold capacity is large to meet the requirements of loading light cargo. If heavy cargo needs to be loaded, the method of compartment loading or the arrangement of small and small compartments is used.

Special purpose bulk carrier

Special bulk carrier is designed and built according to the special requirements of some large quantities of bulk cargo on maritime transportation technology, mainly coal carriers, bulk grain carriers, ore carriers and bulk cement carriers.

Dual purpose bulk carrier

Dual-purpose bulk carrier is a ship designed and built according to the special requirements of some specific bulk cargo or bulk cargo on maritime transportation technology, and has a variety of shipping functions.

Special bulk carrier

Large hatch bulk carrier: the width of the cargo hatch of this type of ship is more than 70% of the width of the ship, and is equipped with cargo lifting equipment, which can load bulk cargo, but also can load wood, steel, rubber, machinery and equipment, newsprint and containers, etc., which is very adaptable.

Self-discharging bulk carrier: is a transport ship with a special cargo hold structure and its own automatic unloading system. It does not have to rely on port facilities to carry out centralized control and fast automatic unloading operations, suitable for the transport of bulk cargoes of mineral sand, grain, coal, cement, fertilizer, etc.

cattle-ship

Livestock ships are bulk carriers that specialize in carrying livestock. In order to prevent livestock from moving around in the cabin, there are partitions in the cabin of the livestock boat, and there are also troughs in the cabin for livestock to feed.

Grain ship

Grain ships are bulk carriers that specialize in carrying grain. It belongs to the dry bulk carrier category.

Concrete boat

Cement carrier is a bulk carrier specialized in carrying cement. It belongs to the dry bulk carrier category.

Steel carrier

Steel carriers are bulk carriers that specialize in carrying steel. It belongs to the dry bulk carrier category.

Bulk class

What classes of ships are usually used for bulk cargoes such as grain, coal, ore, etc.?

First, Capesize type ship, the total deadweight data warehouse is about 150,000 tons of bulk carriers. The ship type is mainly for transporting iron ore, due to the scale limitation

It may pass through the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal, and need to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn.

Panamax, the total deadweight data warehouse is 60,000 tons, as the name suggests, this type of ship refers to the largest bulk carrier that can pass through the Panama Canal under full load.

Third, lightweight bulk carriers, of which more than 40,000 tons of ships are also known as large portable bulk carriers.

4. Small bulk carriers, with a total deadweight data warehouse of 20,000 tons to 27,000 tons, are the largest ship types that can enter the five Great Lakes of the United States. The ore carrier uses the amount of ballast water to adjust the draft of the ship while loading and unloading the cargo.

The Great Lake type bulk carrier refers to the bulk carrier that navigates through the St. Lawrence Waterway in the Great Lakes Region at the junction of the United States and Canada, mainly carrying coal, iron ore and grain.
